AI Leadership Principles / Ownership

Should we hire a Chief AI Officer?

Only if it fixes a real gap. If AI is central to your revenue or risk and nobody can make AI decisions stick, you need an accountable owner with a mandate and a budget. Strategic ownership still stays with the CEO and the executive team.

Why it matters now

The title is spreading, and I understand the appeal: one person to make AI happen. But a title does not fix a missing decision. The question to answer first is what problem the role should solve. Sometimes the answer is a new hire. Often it is a clearer mandate for someone already on the team.

Common mistakes

  • Copying a title because other companies have one, instead of fixing a specific gap.
  • Creating a figurehead or evangelist role with no budget or authority.
  • Making the role so broad that it cannot succeed.
  • Using the hire as a reason for the executive team to step back from AI.

What to do instead

  1. Define the problem first. Write down what is not happening today that the role should fix: decisions that do not stick, no delivery capacity, unmanaged risk.
  2. Check whether you need it. If AI is central to revenue or risk and nobody can make AI decisions stick, you need an accountable owner. If not, a clearer mandate may be enough.
  3. Give real authority. Whoever owns it needs a mandate, a budget and a regular review with the CEO.
  4. Choose the right form. The accountable owner can be an existing executive, a new hire, or an interim or fractional leader while the company builds its own capability.
  5. Keep strategy at the top. The role leads delivery and standards. Strategic ownership stays with the CEO and the executive team.

Your first step this week

Write one paragraph describing the AI decisions that are not being made today, and who should be making them. Decide on the role only once that paragraph is clear.
